( Pictures at Phoenix Coyotes practice with Wayne Gretzky below...)

On February 28th & 29th, 2006 I attended practices for the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes hockey team. It's great because they are free and open to the public. There are usually less than 20 people that come to the practices to watch so it's as if you're getting the VIP treatment!

The Olympics had only been over for 2 days and coach Wayne Gretzky was back leading the practices.

Wayne lives and works here in Phoenix, which is thrilling for all of us who have followed his tremendous career all these years.

Considering all he's been through the last few months with the passing of family members, gambling scandals, Team Canada not winning a medal in the Olympics and media scrutiny, he looked tired today...but the team was full of life and seemed to be having a great practice. Enjoy...

That's Wayne in the red with the cap just left of center.
I've been to a number of practices and each time Wayne is
on the ice with his skates, gloves and stick. Very cool.

Wayne delegates much of the coaching to the assistants.
You'll often notice him in the background just watching.

That's assistant coach Barry Smith in the middle with the gray hair.
He's won Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.

How would you like to be a player who grew up idolizing Gretzky
and then have him on the ice while you try to impress him.

That's Wayne on the left and Grant Fuhr on the right.
Grant was the goalie for the Edmonton Oilers when they won several
Stanley Cup Championships. He is now the goaltender coach for the
Coyotes. Both Wayne and Grant are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Grant posed for this one after practice then took
off his glove and shook my hand. I was thrilled!

Being so close made me realize just how fast these guys can skate.

Mike Ricci having some fun.

He shoots...

He scores!

That's bruiser Tyson Nash smiling on the right after
his shot hit the wall and rocked where I was standing.

It was cool to watch Grant Fuhr coach the goalies.

After practice the local media did their thing with Wayne...

Like many people, I've watched Wayne Gretzky's career with great enthusiasm. Going to several games and open practices, I've had a number of occasions to be around him and have even gotten the chance to talk to him. All I can say is he's a class act and no less...

I will be sad when he is no longer here in Phoenix for us to enjoy.
